After finally convincing her mother that she should take swimming lessons, twelve-year-old Emily discovers a terrible and wonderful secret about herself that opens up a whole new world. Fri 04.00 EDT Emily finds out that she is a mermaid in water when she goes to her first ever swimming lesson. this is a sweet story that I checked out of my elementary school library time after time and for that I will always love it, but I’m glad that I have this perspective now and can apply it to when I recommend stories to little ones (or anyone) at my store. Maybe I’m being harsh, but I want middle grade titles to emphasize listening to yourself and the people around you, compassion, and that if you ask for what you need and express yourself, you deserve to be listened to! especially by your best friend. even some sentences like, “if you were really my best friend, you’d do this” which just strikes me as manipulative :( both girls do this to the other at some point in the story. like, one would be desperately trying to reroute the situation or leave it altogether, and the other would disregard and keep going deeper in. Overall a cute story for younger readers. The tale continues to unfold as she learns her family's history and what Mr. Finally she is allowed the opportunity, and she finds out something extraordinary about herself.
